そして、執務室の門の方を見ながら言った。
「皇太子妃によくしなされ。 今度またこんなことが起これば、その時は決して許さないだろう。」

以後、頼るところがなくなったルドルフ皇太子は母親のエリザベート皇后に会うために多くの努力をした。 自分と似ている面がある母親なら、自分と反対する一面によって果てしなく葛藤を起こす父親、そして皇太子妃に対抗できる最も大きな助力者になれることを期待したためだった。 彼と近い人々の中で、彼の味方はすでに彼のそばを離れた家庭教師たちと、彼とは多少距離が遠いドイツ帝国のヴィルヘルム（Wilhelm）皇太子、そして皇室に力を使うことができないバラをはじめとする数人の侍女たちと侍従たちが全てだった。
- 特に、バラーはハンガリー人であるため、オーストリアの皇族や貴族に密かに無視されがちだった。
「どうしたの？ 誰？入ってこい。」
息子の切なる願いを伝えようとするバラーは、長い努力の末、やっとエリザベート皇后と向き合うことができた。 しかし、息子の意思を伝えようと来たというバラに向き合う皇后の姿を見て、彼はあまりにも驚いた表情をしてしまった。 息子の伝言を伝えに来たという声にも、ただ冷たい表情をしている老いた女性の姿が見えたためだった。
「お願いです。 皇后陛下！ 息子さんの最後の懇請です！」
「もう皇太子殿下が頼りにするのは皇后陛下しかいません！ なにとぞごぶさたください！！！」
「皇后陛下！ 大公妃殿下もこうではありませんでした！！！ 世の中にどんな母親が息子をそんなに非情に無視するんですか！？」
このようなバラの凄絶な叫びにもエリザベート皇后はついに皇太子に会おうとしなかった。 彼の切実な語句を盛り込んだ最後の手紙に対する返事は、皇后の冷淡な伝言だけを伝えるだけだった。
「私はすでに彼から離れている。 彼に影響力を行使することもできない。 それで、あなたを助けることができないんだ。」
その後、皇后はバラーを出せと侍従たちに指示し、これに侍従たちはバラーを追い出そうとした。 その時、バラーからこうした叫び声が響いた。
「これは皇家を越えて、人間としての道理です、皇后陛下！ 皇后陛下！ 本当に人間性に背いたのですか！！！」

その後、バラーはそのことについてウィーンのコーヒーハウスで黒いマントの男に偶然会って知らせるようになった。
「とんでもないことに違いない！ 息子がそのような状況に置かれていることを知っていたはずなのに、そんなに無残に突き放すことができるのか！？」
「事がそうなるとは、私もあえて予想していなかったのです。」
「これは驚くほどではない、衝撃的にならざるを得ない！ 人が窮地に追い込まれたのに、絶壁に押し付けることではなく、何だというのか、これが！？」
“…….”
「いったい彼女、人間なのか？息子に対する態度は一体何？ いや、皇后である前に一応人の子の役割はしなければならないのが道理ではないか！？」
「ひどいことをおっしゃいますよ、閣下。」
「私に人間の子という言葉が出てくる！？ とにかく皇帝という人間も程度が油分だ。 まさか皇后が子供も放り投げる遊び人のような女だとは知らなかったのか！？」
“…….”
「今回だけは大公妃殿下の味方になってあげたい。 あの世で大公妃がもうすぐ死んでもヘレネを皇后として迎えなければならなかったと大声で叫ぶことが目に浮かぶ。」
“…….”
「その大公妃もひどい女ではあった。 しかし、彼は少なくとも、家族を思う気持ちはあったのではないか、やり方が間違っていても。」

「とにかく、私はあのジプシーのような女を許せなくなった。 どんな形であれ、あの世の法廷に必ず立たせる！ その罪は死でも決して許されない！！！」

皇太子が出宮するという知らせの後、ミッツィが彼に従っていた侍女バラーに来ていた。 バラーはルドルフ皇太子の要請でしばらく離れていた。
「皇太子殿下が新しく別荘を設けたと聞きました。 どこにありますか？”
「はい、マイヤーリンク (Mayerling) に新しい別荘を購入されたそうです。 皇太子殿下は、ミッツィさんがマイヤーリンクに来ることを望んでいるそうです。」
「行きません。」
「どうしてですか？」
「何か不吉ですね。 皇居から遠く離れたところに、そんな大変な目にあった殿下が滞在するとおっしゃったじゃないですか。 私は皇太子殿下がしばらく遠くに出ないでほしいです。」
「分かりました。」
「それなら、皇太子殿下はマリーという方と一緒に行かれるのですね。」
「そうでしょうね。」
「失礼ですが、その人を皇太子殿下に引き離すことは……できないのですか？ その方、目つきからとても怖かったです。 まるで、地獄から上がってきた……いや、すみません。 とにかく、何か怖かったです。 その人が皇太子殿下と遠く離れていてほしいです。 その人と一緒にいると、皇太子殿下に変事が必ず起こります。」
「申し訳ありません。 これはもう私もどうしようもないようです。」
「分かりました。 それでも何かあったら必ず連絡してください。 そちらに行きますので。」

マイヤーリンクの大別荘。 ルドルフ皇太子が買い入れた土地に建築された別荘で、皇太子は1年前からそこに住みながら人生を送っていた。 元々はミッツィ·カスパルが来ることを望んだが、彼は不吉だという理由で来なかったし、そうして皇太子は自身を狂的に愛していたマリー·フォン·ヴェッツェラと別荘で同居することになった。
- 別荘には数人の侍従だけが彼に同行していた。 長い間彼を仕えてきた侍女バラーもその一人だった。
今は色々な侍女たちを導く立場にあるはずだが、バラーは彼に従う侍女の役割だけを引き受け、食事提供をはじめとするすべての雑事を自分が自ら引き受けてした。 ルドルフはそのようなバラーを頼りに従った。
マリーはルドルフ皇太子から最も愛されていたが，それでも安心できなかった。 ルドルフがメイドのバラーをもっと気にするのではないかという心配のためだった。 しかし、ルドルフ皇太子のマリーに対する感情とバラーに対する感情は互いに違った。 マリーへの感情はそれこそ自分の恋人のようだったが、バラーへの感情はそれではなく、他の特別な何かだった。
「そういえば、侍女の姿が妙に皇后陛下の姿と似ていませんか？」
台所で調理に没頭していたバラーを見ながら、マリーが皇太子に尋ねた。
「そう、昔からそう思ってはいた。 白い肌と服でも隠せない体つき、そして長い長い髪……その姿を見る度にいつも母のことを考えたりした。 ある意味、永遠に私のそばを去ってくださったお母さんの代わりだったのかもしれない。 でも……お母さんとは確かに違う。 何か違う感じがする。 髪の毛から妙に青みがかった感じがするのが……. 普通の人には見えないということだよ。”
「胸が大きいことは話さないようですね？」
「それをどうやって君の前で話すんだよ……そう、昔うちの家にあんなに胸が大きい人がいたんだって。」
「マリア·アントニア (Maria Antonia) ですね、かつてフランス王妃になった？」
「ははは……でも実は、それほどでもない。 とにかく、それでね、あの女、元々はマジャル人って言ってたんだけど、もしかしたら……うちの家とか、それともバイオン貴族の私生児だったのかも、なんて思ったりするんだ。」
“…….”
「なんだ、嫉妬するのか？」
「いいえ、別に……ふふっ。あの女ももう年を取るほど、聞いたじゃないですか、お母さんの代わりと言われるほど。 私はあの方に比べると若すぎます。 男性なら当然、若くてきれいな女性の味方になるのは当然ではないですか？ だからあんな女がそばにいても皇太子殿下をただ私だけ眺めてくれると信じて疑いません。」
その後、2人はバラーが直接準備した珍しい料理でもてなしを受け、幸せな食事時間を過ごした。

食事を終えて、皇太子さまがマリーと一緒に寝室に入る頃、バラーは食器の整理を終えて、屋敷の外で何かを準備していた。 まず、ほうきが入っている桶を邸宅の入口の前に持ってきては、幼い侍女たちに何か指示を下していた。
「これからは誰もこの邸宅、そして寝室には私たちの侍女たち以外は誰も入ることができない。 たとえ皇帝だとしても。 」
その後、邸宅の外で幼い侍女たちが一人ずつ並んで塗って行って用意したほうきが入っている桶からほうきを一つずつ受け取って玄関の内側に入り始めた。
「もし、誰かがこの邸宅に来ようとするなら、こんな言葉を伝えなさい、皇太子殿下が誰も邸宅に来ることを望まないと。」
その時、バラーから聞こえてきた声だった。 バラーは以前は優しく慎ましい若い女性の声を出していた。 しかし、その時に聞こえてきたバラーの声は、やや幼いながらも（マリのそれよりもっと幼い感じの）冷たい少女の声だった。
…….
「ここに皇太子さまがいると聞いた。」
「申し訳ありませんが、皇太子殿下は誰も邸宅に来ることを望んでいません。」
皇太子の知人である貴族青年たちが邸宅を訪問しようとしたが、邸宅の門を遮っていた幼い侍女たちが彼を阻止した。
「どうしてだろう？」
「今日は恋人と一緒に二人だけの時間を過ごしたいと言っていました。 申し訳ありませんが、今日は戻ってください。」
……
一方、ルドルフ皇太子は邸宅の奥の間でマリーと一緒にベッドに眠ろうとしていた。
「私はいつも死を望んでいた。 できることなんて何もなかったし、私の味方なんて誰もいない絶望的な人生に投げ出され、親たちは私を見てもいなかったから。 それでいつもお酒に酔って、麻薬に酔っていた。 でも……死を見つめることだけが答えではないことがわかった、あなたと一緒にいながら。」
「それなら殿下はもともとここで……！」
「うん。ここであなたと一緒に最後の時間を過ごしたかった。 最後のキスの後、あなたと共に死で永遠の愛を享受したかったのだ。」
“…….”
「しかし、このように何日か生きていくうちに、死というものをこれ以上望まないようになった。 そして、気がついたよ。 世の中には死ではないもう一つの道があるということを。”
「それで、どうするつもりですか？」
「どこでもいい、ここから遠く離れた国に行きたい。 今すぐ無一文になってもいい、貧しく暮らしても、少なくとも皇居で手足が縛られたように生きていくよりははるかに良いだろう。 私は平凡な男として生きたい。 貧しくなるが、時には貧しさの中で苦しむこともあるが、自由になれる。 それだけでも私は好き。」
「そんな生活には私も一緒にいられるんですよね？」
「……. そうだね。 君が望むならいくらでも一緒にいてもいい。 もちろん後悔しない自信があるなら。」
「大丈夫です！ 私は後悔しません。 皇太子殿下がいるところなら、私はどこにでも滞在できます！」
「そうだね、これからは『あなた』ぐらいでいい。 皇太子殿下と言わなくてもいい。 もうそのすべてを捨てて生きるから。」
「それでは、これからは『あなた』と呼びますね。 大丈夫でしょう？」
「ははは…….」
「それでは、塗っても連れて行きますか？」
「そうしようか。それなら、もう私の母のようにバラーを扱うよ。 そして君と結婚して、お母さん、そして新婦と一緒に新しい出発をするんだ。 どう？素敵じゃない？」
“…….”
「うん。たとえお母さんに似ているが、お母さんとはあまりにも違う人だよ。 母のように私にいつも無関心でもなく、私にいつも献身的で、優しい人だった。 ギゼラ姉さえ去ってからは、彼が事実上私の母のような存在だったと言っても過言ではない。」
「それでは……バラーを今からは姑として仕えなければならないということですね？」
「そうだね。私もこの別荘を出て、他の国に行って新しい出発をすれば、その後バラを私の母のように従うだろう。 マリー、あなたもバラのように優しくて美しい女性が本当に私の母、皇后陛下の代わりにあなたの姑になったら、どうなると思う？ いいと思わない？」
「それも悪くないですね。」
ルドルフ皇太子の問いに答えるマリーから明るい笑みが広がっており、その姿を見ていたルドルフ皇太子も静かに微笑んでいた。

その頃、ルドルフ皇太子とマリーが泊まっている寝室に向かう廊下では、道なりに人々の群れが歩いていた。 皆、侍女の服装をした人たちだった。
先頭に立った人は長い間ルドルフ皇太子を祀った人で、彼がエリザベート皇后の代わりに自分の母親のように思ったバラーで覆いが載せられた食べ物の器を両手で丁寧に持っていて、後に続く幼い侍女たちはほうきを一つずつ手に持っていた。 彼らは皆廊下を通り、寝室に向かって素早く歩いていた。
V.
皇太子とその恋人が密会を楽しんでいた頃、静かに部屋のドアが開き、その後両手で食べ物の器を持った侍女、バラーと幼い侍女たちが足を運んだ。 その後、バラーが寝室の真ん中あたりで止まると、後に続くほうきを持った侍女たちもやはり足を止めた。
「ああ、バラー。 なんだい？」
「お休みの最中に突然立ち寄る失礼をすることになりました、皇太子殿下、ここで早速お願いがありました。」
「そう、それは何だ？ 一度言ってみるよ。 君の要請なら何でも聞いてあげるから。」
これまで何の要請もしなかったバラーの声に皇太子は急いで立ち上がった。 これまで自分のために苦労してくれたバラーの要請なら何でも聞いてあげようとしたのだ。 そう言う制服姿のルドルフ皇太子の前で、バラーは静かに頭を下げてばかりいた。
……
これ以上、皇家のために自分を犠牲にしなくてもいい。
これ以上後継者という名の重さに押しつぶされなくてもいい。
もうすぐ貴方は貴方の望み通り自由になるから。
……
バラーは少女のような冷淡な声でささやくように独り言を言った。 それからしばらくして、頭を上げて、皿の蓋を左手で開け、自分の左側に投げつけた。
蓋の中には灰白色の拳銃一丁が置かれており、それを左手で持つやいなや塗る皿を自分の右側に投げた後に銃を持たない右手で頭巾をはがし、髪を結った紐を荒くほどいた。 まるでエリザベート皇后のそれを連想させる長い長い髪が彼の腰を越えて太もも、膝の下まで降りてきており、彼と共に前髪に隠された顔の姿まで現れたので、それこそ美しい少女の姿がルドルフ皇太子の目の前に現れていた。
以後、少女はルドルフ皇太子が立っているその数歩前まで近づき、少女の挙動に不審を感じたマリーを幼い侍女たちが各自のほうきに隠しておいた剣を取り出し、追いかけ始めた。 少女は恐怖におびえ、ベッドの上に座り込んでしまったルドルフ皇太子に銃を向けた。
「どうしたんだ……！一体何をするつもりか！？」
「自由にするのだ、皇子よ……！」
その直後、一度の激しい銃声が響いた。 銃声は激しく大気を震動させ、皇太子さまの弱々しい悲鳴を飲み込んでしまった。 頭に銃傷を負い、血を流し、ルドルフ皇太子はそのように倒れた。 ルドルフ皇太子が倒れた場所は血で赤く染まった。
この頃、ルドルフ皇太子の年ごろ30歳だった。
Imperium concidet。
